L sat at the computer and stared at its blank screen. For weeks he had only had one thing on his mind. And that was his young companion Yagami Light. Although Light disliked the use of his family name when addressing him.

The doors to the compound building opened, and in popped Amane Misa, whom L believed to be Light’s girlfriend. He had deduced this himself, and Misa had never failed to remind him whenever the three were together. L was loosely acquainted with her, but that was the extent of it. She was too loud and shrill for his tastes.

As if on cue, Light came down the stairs, fingers running through his messy brown hair. L turned his chair around and observed the two. His heart sank whenever they were together, for he had been rapidly developing feelings for his young brown haired friend.

Light and Misa talked for a few minutes, as was their usual ritual, and Misa left soon after she arrived. Light turned to walk over to the computers, and L did his best to look uninterested. “So, Light-kun… how was your visit?” He inquired.

The teen shrugged and replied with a brief “Good, I suppose.” He proceeded to sit down next to L, whose feet were shuffling, an indication that he was nervous, or flustered. Light could never tell which at what time. “Why do you ask, Ryuuzaki?” L held back a smile. Ryuuzaki. He wanted so badly to tell Light to call him L, but knew that he could not.

“No reason in particular. I just notice that whenever she comes to visit, you talk for a few moments, then she leaves.”  The older boy chewed on his thumbnail and pretended to be interested in the computer. “Look, Ryuuzaki. If this is about Misa being the second Kira--” L shook his head.

“It’s not. Just a personal question of sorts. Don’t let it weigh in your mind too heavily.” He looked at Light with a genuine sincerity in his eyes. This was strange for him, especially when asking questions. This caught his companion off guard, and he stared at L for what seemed like the longest time. “I don’t know for sure. That’s just the way it’s been. I haven’t got much to really say to her.”

L nodded. “Very well, Light-kun. That is all I wanted to know.” He turned back to his computer and pretended to type. A well rehearsed answer, but I wonder. Is there a hidden meaning behind it that I haven’t found? Perhaps he doesn’t want me to know his true feelings for Amane because he believes that I still think she is the second Kira. We will see. L reached for the nearby bowl of candies. He placed it between himself and Light.

“Candy, Light-kun?” He popped a small chocolate into his mouth. The younger boy stared for a moment again. “…Yes, I’ll have some. Thank you, Ryuuzaki.” Light reached his hand into the bowl slowly and pulled out a few candies, piling them on the table in front of him. L held back a chuckle, which was also quite unlike him. “You can’t hide your inner affections, Light-kun.”

The brown haired teen stopped in his tracks for a moment, but resumed again without a word.
